Confused about menopause?
You’re not alone. We sat down with Liz Josefsberg, wellness expert, to talk all things menopause.

What causes sleep issues during menopause?
As we lose estrogen, our circadian rhythm (our body’s internal 24-hour clock) is upset. Estrogen is responsible for regulating sleep hormones like melatonin and feel-good hormones like serotonin. Progesterone is a calming hormone that helps us stay asleep. As those decline, we see sleep disruptions. Night sweats and hot flashes can be events that wake women up in the middle of the night, and without progesterone we have trouble calming down and falling back to sleep. Finally, menopause disrupts cortisol levels. Swings can make it hard to sleep due to higher feelings of stress and an inability to control it.

How do I know if I’m in menopause?
Perimenopause begins for many women in their late 30s or early 40s. This is when the reproductive hormones start to fluctuate. As we begin to lose those reproductive hormones and enter perimenopause, there are a host of wide-ranging physical effects. As perimenopause sets in there is no real map or lighting strike moment for most women. They may not even really recognize they are in it. The thing I hear more often than any other statement is a nagging feeling that they simply don’t feel like themselves. Perhaps they are more stressed out, quicker to anger or less interested in sex.

How can I find relief?
Menopause can be managed well, and women can find a lot of good relief with lifestyle shifts and a focus on their total body wellness. A focus on good nutrition and incorporating foods that have plant estrogens in them at every meal can be a game-changer. Additionally, studies show regular exercise can improve menopause symptoms by as much as 30-50%. Exercise will not only help regulate stress and mood swings, but can help with sleep quality. Staying hydrated will be essential.
And for me personally, when I was going into menopause, I lived off CBDistillery’s tinctures, or the hemp oil that you put under your tongue. That is a quick way to administer the hemp. I still keep that little tincture by my bed so that if I wake up, I can put a little extra drop under my tongue and it will help me fall back asleep quicker.

What can I do to prepare for menopause?
If you have not hit menopause or even perimenopause yet, the best thing you can do now is to build the lifestyle habits above into daily, non-negotiable routines. If you enter perimenopause with a regular exercise schedule, good eating habits and sleep rituals, you will not need to establish them.
